Rudolf Steiner, philosopher and author, who lived at the beginning of the 20th century believed we should focus on individual freedom, because only individuals can be free, but not the collective. His conclusion was that nationalistic feelings arise out of freedom, not the other way around. He was convinced that nationalism lays the foundation for conflicts and wars.

I recently read an interesting essay by Randolph Bourne, writer and peace activist, who opposed US interference in World War I, so I decided to write an article based on his essay. At the time a lot of his articles were censored, he stated "I feel very much secluded from the world, very much out of touch with my times...the magazines I write for die violent deaths, and all my thoughts are unprintable".
